Survival - you must put your oxygen mask on first before you try to save someone else

When you get on a plane the first thing the flight attendant does is take you through the safety protocols for the flight. One of those safety protocols is to instruct you to put your oxygen mask on first before you help the person next to you. In business it’s the same protocol, you must set a clear path to your own business survival and that includes putting your oxygen mask on first before you try to save someone else’s dying business strategies. That translates into “Save your own business first before you try to save another business.” This also translates into are you spreading yourself too thin and not taking care of yourself personally or professionally?

As the owner of your company, you are expected to right the ship and lead your employee’s and clients to shore safely, when a storm hits your bow. So, what does it mean when I ask where is your oxygen mask? It means as a woman-owned business, it is your responsibility to see danger before it hits. In other words, make sure financials are not drying up, accounts aren’t dwindling, competition isn’t knocking down your doors and stealing your clients, plus ensure that your company flourishes no matter what happens in the future.

So what does it mean when I say, put on your oxygen mask first? It means if you need to take a day to pamper yourself, regroup or just regain the energy you’ve lost in order to clear your head, do it. It is surprising how one day to regroup can help you refocus your strategy in order to help you regain perspective and maybe if you need to, ask for help to fine-tune your strategy to move forward.

As a woman, you were brought up to nurture and take care of others before yourself, but you must change that type of behavior and think more strategically in order to survive your business crashing into the sea of despair and destroying everything you’ve built up until now. So, you must ensure that you put on your oxygen mask first before you even think about helping anyone else. Taking care of yourself isn't being selfish, it's being smart businesswomen.
