“If not me, then who?”
That is the question everyone should be asking themselves
when facing the conflict of starting over or achieving their goals in life.
This question was asked of herself by Deshanna Barber,
Captain, U.S. Army, and Miss USA 2016. She asked herself this question due to
not winning the Ms. Washington, DC pageant a few times. When she wanted to give
up, she stopped and asked herself, “If not me, then who?”
Since Winning Miss USA in 2016, she’s gone on to become a
public speaker whom I love to listen to in various videos on YouTube. One such
video, she said the following words, and it’s one of the best speeches I’ve heard
in years:
“Do not fear failure, but be sure to fear regret!” A powerful
statement, isn’t it? She went on to say, “Giving up is the birth of regret. You
will be filled with hundreds of moments of people telling you “NO”. The reality of life is that we will all hear
more NO’s than we will hear Yeses. We will fail a whole lot more but never
accept the No’s. Be afraid of the possibility of a YES. Because you decided to
quit before the clock struck 12.”
Powerful speech, huh? It is something like what my father used
to preach to me as I was growing up. “Never give up if you fail, get up off the
ground and try again,” he used to say. “Keep going until you succeed. Change
your circle of friends if you need to weed out the naysayers and negative
people holding you back. Surround yourself with positive, uplifting friends who
aren’t jealous of your potential, then get back out there and try harder.
