Maintaining one's balance between work and life in today’s crazy world

Due to the social norms of society we as human beings always put work first in our priority list instead of our personal life. Success and prosperity have always been at the forefront of our desires instead of creating a harmonious work-life balance integration to live by each day. By creating a harmonious balance between work and personal life you can improve your health, your love life, your emotional and mental well-being, and most importantly, your success in your career.

Why is a well balance work-life so important in your life?

A well-balanced work-life is important because it means you equally prioritize each demand of your personal life and that of your career. While your career helps pay the bills in order to have a successful personal life, you shouldn’t allow that career to take absolute priority over your personal life.

Your work-life balance can be considered as a poor work-life balance if you are dealing with the following:

1)      Demanding boss who makes you work extra long hours past your normal work day.

2)      Horrible increase in work responsibilities that are unrealistic in nature

3)      Children’s schedule for sports and after school activities

4)      New house with yard and other increased home responsibilities

5)      Friends seem to be disappearing because you always turn down invites to things

6)      Not able to take a vacation or enjoy the things you love to do outside

Employer’s need to plan for their employee’s

Unfortunately, many employers these days don’t think about creating a well-balanced work-life balance amongst their employee’s because all their thinking about is their own bottom line and productivity. Now what would happen if that same employer created a good work-life balanced environment for their employee’s? They would have a more enjoyable environment to work in, less employee’s calling in sick or asking for a day off, plus a more loyal and productive environment that would increase their bottom line. If that same employer offered their employee’s the option to telecommute or flexible schedules it would help increase the employee’s opportunity to have a more well-balanced work-life and they wouldn’t want to seek a new job all the time.

What’s the best job to obtain?

Over the years protegee’s have asked what is the best job to obtain in their career, my answer is always the same – the best job is the one that you are passionate about and would love to do the rest of your life. When I was lobbying in Washington DC, many a young protegee would ask me how to make the most money in lobbying field? I would always respond with if you’re looking for big bucks play the lottery or play poker in Vegas, never look for big bucks in lobbying unless you plan to sell your soul to the highest bidder for your ability to talk to elected representatives. Instead find that one issue that you are passionate about like animal rights, Justice, or gay rights and become a lobbyist for an organization that specializes in those issues. Otherwise, stay away from lobbying you’ll never make any money in the arena of politics unless you were born into it like I was.

Unplugging or taking a vacation

We all have made that long list of things to do around the house or listed that bucket list of things to do that we’ve always wanted to accomplish, but never get around to either of those lists. Why? Because so many hardworking career-oriented individuals fail to unplug from the corporate world or even consider taking a much-needed vacation for fear of missing out on an important meeting or staying on top of work loads in the office. Even if you take a day off once a month and chip away at that honey do list around the house. Or just chill out on the porch with a glass of wine and a good book. How about spend the day chilling out in front of the television watching old movies. Maybe play tourist in your own community while staying away from social media, emails or text messaging. If your boss calls you, politely tell them to respect your time off and ask someone else their very important question. Its your earned time away from work, take it and let everyone know you will be unavailable and to respect your time off – that includes your bosses.

Personal Time with those you love

Spending time with loved ones or even just friends is most important in life. Even if you have to schedule time in your busy schedule to enjoy the company of those you cherish the most it is important to do so. This also means taking time for yourself in your schedule. For the ladies even if it’s to get a pedicure or manicure, or for the men a massage or a simple drink with friends at the local pub, schedule that personal time so you can unplug and relax for an hour or so.

In conclusion, the more you strive for a well-balanced, work-life balance the happier you will be. If you are a manager, owner, or leader you’ll want to read my next blog post which will be “How to be a more caring leader to your employee’s.
